In 1992, the U.S. government passed a law that the month of May is to be designated as Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month. It's a time where we celebrate Asian-American culture and history, and recognize the accomplishments and contributions of Asian-Americans to our country.
So, at the University of Michigan, we make a big deal about it. But, because our regular semester ends earlier than most schools and a lot of students are gone in May, we celebrate it in April on our campus. Yay!
Starting March 29th, UMAD is working with UAAMSA and AAPHA on a collaborative art and diversity project. We will be making 1000 origami cranes to raise money for C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. Be on the lookout for details and updates on how to participate!

dr. martin luther king jr. day
UMAD's been having a slow start. i often wonder if there really is a need for such an organization and what is our purpose. recently, an unfortunate incident occurred at the dental school. one of my friends (who is asian-american) was seen in the pre-doctoral clinics as a new patient. the supervising clinical instructor made a racist comment. my friend was initially more appalled than offended, that someone in our progressive utopia of ann arbor, moreover a faculty member at our extremely diverse university of michigan, would ever say such a thing, especially to a PATIENT.
my friend reported to have emailed the dean and received a reply that he would "ensure these things won't happen again".
anyway, you and i likely know that people in the dental school make ridiculous comments ALL THE TIME.
so, if anything, UMAD exists to raise awareness of such things and hopefully foster understanding of different cultures represented at the dental school. if you have a story to share, please email it to asian.dental@gmail.com.

May Filipino Health Fair in Detroit
This May we teamed up with Wayne State's APAMSA and the Filipino Community Center in Detroit for their annual health fair. T'was pretty huge, with booths ranging from massage therapy and carotid artery dopplers, to cancer screenings. Of course, with any other large Asian gathering, there was also some yummy food.
We worked with Dr. Sitchon from Livonia who was doing basic screenings. In addition, we talked to the communtiy about oral health and gave oral hygiene instructions. Mabuhay!
